Ask a teacher at the end of a long term which students they spoke to most, and the honest answer usually involves the students who made themselves impossible to ignore.

This is not a criticism of teachers. Attention in a room of thirty is a scarce resource under constant competing demand, and demand is not distributed evenly. Some students generate it and some do not.

The students who do not are a recognisable population: quiet, compliant, competent enough not to trigger concern, and disproportionately female in most classroom observation studies.

What the observation research finds

Systematic classroom observation studies going back several decades have consistently found that boys receive more teacher interactions than girls in mixed classrooms. Estimates of the imbalance vary; a common finding is somewhere around a sixty-forty split of total interactions.

The composition of those interactions differs too. The boys' surplus is heavily weighted towards behavioural management and towards open questioning. Girls' interactions are more often procedural.

Studies also find that boys are more likely to call out and to have call-outs answered, and that girls are more likely to be asked to wait for a turn — a finding that has been reported often enough to be considered reasonably robust.

It is worth being careful here: some of this literature is old, effect sizes vary considerably between studies, and classroom practice has changed. But the direction has been stable across a long period.

The mechanism is triage, not preference

The uncomfortable part of this finding is how ordinary the explanation is.

A teacher managing a room allocates attention to the highest immediate need. A student who is disrupting requires intervention now. A student who is visibly lost requires help now. A student who is quietly producing adequate work requires nothing now.

Repeat that triage several hundred times a term and the resulting distribution is exactly what the observation studies find, with no differential intent at any point.

This matters because it identifies what would have to change. Exhorting teachers to be fairer addresses an intent that mostly is not there. Changing the mechanism — how turns are allocated, how work is sampled, how "adequate" is checked — addresses the thing actually producing the distribution.

What the quiet student loses

Three things, in rough order of importance.

Diagnostic contact. Misconceptions are found by talking to students. A student whose written work is adequate can hold a substantial conceptual gap for a long time without anyone discovering it, because nothing about her output raises a flag. The gap surfaces later, usually at a point where it is more expensive to fix.

Stretch. Extension work, harder questions and encouragement into advanced options tend to go to students who are salient to the teacher. Salience is generated by interaction. A student who is not salient is less likely to be told she should consider the higher tier, and this is a documented pattern in studies of who gets recommended for advanced courses.

Practice at claiming space. This one compounds furthest. A student who spends twelve years not interrupting, waiting for turns and deferring to louder voices has had twelve years of practice at a specific social behaviour, and no practice at its alternative. That habit does not stop at the school gate.

The compliance trap

There is a particular version of this that affects strong students hardest.

Being easy to teach is rewarded. It produces positive reports, warm relationships with staff, and a reputation as a good student. All of that feels like success, and in the short term it is.

What it does not produce is the experience of being pushed. A student who never causes a problem is a student who is never the subject of a conversation about what she should be doing instead — and those conversations are where trajectories get changed.

The clearest evidence for this is indirect but suggestive: studies of who is recommended for advanced and gifted programmes find that behavioural salience predicts nomination independently of measured attainment.

What actually changes the distribution

Structural turn-taking is the intervention with the most support and the least cost. Randomised name selection, no-hands questioning, and mandatory circulation each remove the allocation from the moment-to-moment triage that produces the skew. Teachers who adopt these methods and then measure typically find their previous distribution was more skewed than they believed.

Sampling work rather than only marking it surfaces the quiet student's misconceptions. So does requiring a specific written response from every student rather than a volunteered one.

Explicit stretch offers made to named students, rather than announced to a room, reach students who will not self-select. This is the same finding as in the physics take-up literature, and it recurs because it is the same mechanism.

For the student in the position

The useful reframe is that asking questions is not an admission of confusion; it is the mechanism by which the resource gets allocated. In a system where attention follows demand, generating some is a rational act rather than an imposition.

And it is worth knowing that "she never gives any trouble" is not a description of achievement. It is a description of convenience, and the two are not the same thing.
